Last month, meanwhile, Betfred announced plans to shutter 132 of its UK betting shops, reducing its workforce by over 600 employees.
Betfred CEO Jo Whittaker said: “We have tried hard to protect all our sites and the colleagues who work in them, but the combined impact of higher employer National Insurance contributions, wage inflation, increases in gambling taxes and wider economic uncertainty has left us with no choice.”

Bringing you series of articles such as Poker on Screen and Poker in Print has been a massive source of pride for myself and the team and I even got the chance to discuss poker in the movies and on television on the recent episode of the award-winning podcast, The Chip Race.
As ever, I am indebted to too many people to mention, but Derek, Bill, Jasmine and every one of the Calvin Ayre team, as well as Calvin himself of course, have all shown a lot of faith in me to carry the torch and I hope I’ve done them all credit.

I have to admit it’s a strange feeling knowing that it’s all coming to an end. I never actually thought that I would be here when they flipped the switch and turned off the lights at Calvinayre.com. I wouldn’t trade my time at Calivnayre.com for anything else in my professional career, it’s been an amazing ride. My pitch to get my foot in the door was simple, I wanted to work for the Rolling Stone of the casino world and without a doubt, it’s been the greatest education in my writing career.
My motivation for working at Calvinayre.com was having the privilege to work with some of the best creative minds in the gambling industry.
I want to thank Calvin for creating a platform that speaks to the gambling industry in a unique voice. He’s a guy who is not afraid to back his creative team, even in the face of a tough industry story.
