About Revolvero
One tribunal found in 2019 that Lao Holdings had acted in bad faith and ordered it to pay Laos $1.95 million. Another made a similar finding against Sanum and awarded the government $1.78 million.
A third arbitration produced another award worth nearly $1.3 million, taking the amount Laos is seeking to more than $5 million.
Seven years later, Laos says it is still trying to collect.
About Revolvero
The sheer scale of pachinko underscores Japan’s complex relationship with gambling. Valued at around $130 billion in 2020, the industry represented roughly 2.5% of Japan’s GDP, highlighting its significant place in the country’s leisure economy.
Developers could absolutely take away lessons on entertainment and engaging the local audience from this longstanding tradition.
Perhaps casinos in Japan could be more slot-heavy, suggests Leckert. “It’s obvious that, culturally, the Japanese have enjoyed playing these machines. Slots might be more successful in Japan than in Macau or Singapore.”
What is Revolvero?
“You shouldn’t necessarily need 100 people and millions of euros of infrastructure to have a great idea and turn it into a successful slot,” Curwen says.
Lower barriers to entry could significantly widen the pool of potential game creators. Curwen sees opportunities not only for established and emerging studios, but for operators, suppliers, entrepreneurs and potentially entirely new entrants.
“The big change is that technology can increasingly provide the infrastructure,” he says. “The creator provides the idea. And I think that will make the industry much more interesting.”
